Futur Proche: Prospect/Monument/Refuge
2018

Futur Proche: Prospect/Monument/Refuge
video installation (4.3 x 6.4 metres); running time: 18 mins

Inspired by survival manuals and science fiction, made with an interest in protective structures and their surrounding terrain, the collages activated in Futur Proche were initially assembled using offset lithographic source material from the 1960’s and 70’s. Close observation of colour, registration and CMYK printed dots inform the meticulous hand-cuts and vertical compositions, ultimately cultivating an exploration of transrealism, apocalypse theory and surreal environmental phenomena.

The collages synchronize images from our past with potential futures, while the study of traditional woodcut landscape scrolls influenced the vertical stacking and ultimately, the subtle animation of the Futur Proche compositions. The final video assemblage pushes past a still portrait of nostalgic optimism towards ‘the future’ by employing time and movement, placing the viewer in a continuous observation cycle of the everyday and of the spectacular.
